Web 2.0 is the new avatar of the World Wide Web.  New online business models, trends, and Information Technologies.

  • Most Web 2.0 organizations use open-source technology that lets you move productivity from your own PC to the internet.  For example social networking web sites or blogs uses the Web 2.0 platforms.  Internet companies such as Amazon, Apple, LinkedIn, Facebook, MSN, Twitter, Yahoo!, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc., have done pioneering work in using the internet for online business.  Now thousands of companies are following the suit and have started using the digital platforms based on the Web 2.0 technologies.  Power is now given to the user to create contents on the web sites.  Another important change is that walls are becoming thinner between PC and the smart phones.

  • Internet platforms or digital platforms can be used for marketing or training.  It is necessary to learn about the social media marketing strategies.

  • The following main characteristics makes the new avatar of Web 2.0 different as compared to Web 1.0:

    • Faster and affordable bandwidth gives rich (streaming) media experiences.

    • Interactive and dynamic websites.

    • Social media networking sites where content is published by common users and not necessarily IT people.

    • Software and data are in the cloud.

    • GPS technology allows geographical location of user is automatically known to the web site to show relevant content.

    • Website access across mobile devices such as smart phone.

    • Web 2.0 web sites are intelligent and data driven where no two users may experience the same thing.

  • 'Data' is the next 'Intel inside'.  What is important is the quality and availability of data and not the format.  In other words any layman user now can upload a video or picture on Facebook and share with others easily without going to web programmer or IT expert.  Next revolution expected is that of database of the metadata.  That will be called Web 3.0.

  • B2B (business to business) or B2C (business to consumer) websites are now based on the Web 2.0 platforms because of the following advantages:

    • Website is now becoming more interactive for better serving the customers.  For example eBay or Amazon.

    • Presence on the social media networking web sites is important for positive brand building and direct connection from prospect or customers.  E.g. Wagh-Bakri chai, an Indian tea company using Facebook effectively for cyber branding.

    • Easily integrates with cell phone or smart phone and other mobile devices such as iPad or Amazon Kindle to deliver contents anywhere anytime.

  • Web 2.0 tools or online development are putting power into the hands of ordinary web users are listed below:

    • Widgets.

    • Mashups.

    • Wikis and online collaboration.

    • Social media networking sites.

    • Blogs such as WordPress.

    • Tagging of pictures.

    • User submitted reviews and ratings.

  • Web 3.0 is already on the horizon.  "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable form magic" - Arthur C. Clarke.  User friendly text-to-speech technology will be used to help consumers in the automated call centers -robots will replace humans in the back office operations (BPO).  The 3D internet and more and more of the AI - artificial intelligence will feature the next avatar of the World Wide Web three point zero.  However, it is too early to hazard a guess.  First let us digest the Web 2.0 completely.

  • User friendly and easy to understand web analytics reports are now available to improve web sites and get feedback from customers.   Click here to see the actual demo of web analytics reports of sites like WordPress, YouTube, etc.
