Software Export contract - Middle East - Singapore

Successfully developed a package for a Singapore based software company

12 August 1982

 

Formally launched a new organization, Westind.  One of the first few in Pune.

Data processing - Inauguration session at Mahratta Chambers of Commerce & Industries (Keynote address by Mr. Shreekant Kirloskar)

1980- 1981

Received the first order to develop Payroll software and carry out the data-processing on a main-frame system

Developed programs in COBOL for Vanaz Engineers, Pune.  Followed by many more companies to outsource the data processing work.

1980 onwards.

Started own business, in computer arena.  Setup a company Westind Integrated Systems Pvt. Ltd.

 

 

Software development and Computer Data Processing business:

 

ICL 1904 S mainframe computer system.  This was installed in the Regional Computer Center at University of Pune.  First data processing company in Pune, to offer payroll and account processing.

1978 – 1980

Computer Service Engineer at CMS Infosystems Pvt. Ltd.

 

Commissioning of 1401 CPU, 729 tape drives, 1403 Line Printer, 1402 Card Reader / Punch machines - Autocoder programming language.  Installing and servicing of IBM 1401 mainframe computer system, such as IBM 1401 at Tata Motors, Pimpri, Pune (then Telco). Union Carbide computer system, Delhi.  See pictures.

1977 – 1978

Customer Engineer at CMC Ltd.  Computer Engineer.  IBM operations in India were closed down due to FERA regulation.

Maintenance of mainframe computers, IBM 1401, IBM 1620, 729 Tape drive, 1402 card reader. Servicing of ICL 1901 computer system at Kirloskar Pneumatic Co. Ltd. IBM left India and CMC was mooted by DOE.  See rare newspaper report.

There was an institute, called Robotron, where they were training computer engineers,  maintenance of IBM 360 mainframe computer system with large tape drives, and line printers.  Few engineers from India were selected for the main frame service training, including me.  We were actually learning how computer hardware work and how to do troubleshooting of the electronic circuits.  It was third generation machine.  So I became qualified computer engineer to service computer systems.  Earlier I was trained on the IBM 1401 mainframe computers, that was using punch cards.

1977

Trainee - computer hardware engineer at VEB KOMBINAT ROBOTRON Schulungszentrum  (Training Centre).

 

Robotron Training Centre, Leipzig, Germany.

Practical training for debugging and servicing of computer mainframe hardware. Training in Germany on Mainframe computer.  CPU, Tape drive, card reader, line printer. PCB level and component level repair. Learning residence operating system of IBM 360 / 370 kind of mainframe systems in Leipzig, Germany.

     

1975 - 1977

Initiation in computer line.  Customer Engineer at IBM.  Customer Engineer to maintain IBM 1401 system.

 

Selected by IBM: First job after passing out from V. J. T. I.   Computer engineer to service Mainframe computers.
