Blunder in using the Facebook – 1,500 guests, police was called – Birthday Party cancelled.

Germany, June 2011:  You should double check your Facebook settings before posting a party invitation on the Facebook wall.  A teenage girl in Germany who forgot to mark her birthday invitation as private on Facebook fled her own party when more than 1,500 guests showed up and around 100 police officers, some on horses, were needed to keep the crowd under control.  11 people were temporarily detained, one police officer was injured, dozens of girls wearing flip-flops cut their feet on broken glass and firefighters had to extinguish two small fires at the sixteenth birthday  party in Hamburg, Germany.   The host,  teenage girl, had initially only wanted to ask some close friends over to her home in Hamburg – Bramfeld when she posted her invitation on Facebook, but erroneously she published it where setting was ‘everyone’.  As a result everyone on Facebook could see it.  The invitation quickly went viral, and some 15,000 people confirmed online they would come to the party without even knowing the host.  When the girl’s  parents found out, they made their daughter cancel the party, informed police, and hired a private security service to protect their home.  Despite  public announcements in Hamburg that the party had been cancelled, some 1,500 teen-agers and young adults showed up on the street in front of their home.

  • Moral of the story:  Learn Facebook settings.  Spend some time in studying the help pages.  Arrange a training session in your community – offline or online – invite social media consultant like Zaveri to learn the basics.  The training session is nothing to do with bits & bytes.  In other words not technical but simple operations details, settings, do and don’t of using Facebook.

  • You see, the Facebook is wonderful but not knowing how to use the Web 2.0 technology is the real problem.   Get trained and enjoy the social media sites.
