  • Tips on doing online business.  How to leverage e-Business technology for competitive advantage.  You can download all presentations from this E-learning web site prepared by Prof. Jyotindra Zaveri.

Abstract of the video lecture of Zaveri and corresponding PowerPoint Presentation side by side.

  • These are top reasons why people buy online.

    • The online shop is open 24 x 7 x 365.  The ability to shop at any time is a great convenience for many shoppers.

    • Ability to avoid crowds in another reason for shopping from the online malls.  Also confidentiality is maintained.

    • Ability to quickly compare prices online and compare specification of similar product or service providers.

    • Items are easier to find in the 'click-and-mortar' shops as compare to the 'brick-and-mortar' shops.

  • Recommended improvements to shopping websites.

    • Online inventory status checking.  This is important to ensure that the 'promise to delivery' is kept.  This is possible only if ERP software is deployed which is integrated with the website.

    • Customer reviews and ratings are displayed.  On the www  we are bombarded with the advertisements and now we have also become smart to take the message with a pinch-of-salt.  We have become 'banner-blind'.   We have now learned how to separate the marketing hype from reality.  That is why word-of-mouth -WOM is not more important.   Recommendation or review given by actual buyer is important.   WOM is recommendations from other consumers is a trusted form of proudct or service communications.  For instance on the Amazon site thousands of people buy (or do not buy) based on the online rviews posted by other buyers and their actual experiences.  All these are fallout of the new avatar of the web referred as Web 2.0.  Preferred or importance is given by consumer in this order - most trusted is 'recommendations from consumers', followed by Newspaper reports, and consumers opinions posted in blogs (like facebook or WordPress), followed by branded web sites, then the TV or radio comes.

    • Faster check-out time.

    • Online order tracking.

    • Stored database of billing information and shipping data.

    • Product videos.

    • Live chat with a human for clarification is also recommended.

  • SEO - Search Engine Optimization:

    • Google search engine is sometimes fooled by many (so called) SEO consultants.  SEO is required and should be done carefully.  The word or phrase that you type in the search engine window is called the search term.

    • Basically SEO professionals study what people are searching, put these words in the website as 'keywords'.  The spider sent by the search engines will read these 'keywords' and update the 'index' with the site address.

    • Recently Google has changed the algorithm so all SEO needs to be done again.  Sites which were coming on top have now slided down and so on.  In short, SEO techniques also has changed due to Web 2.0.
